Sex Ads Make Up A Third Of Craigslist's Revenue!

I guess those creepers who post ads looking for some extra company in the bedroom are actually doing some good. Advanced Interactive Media Group, an independent firm, recently released a report that said that a about $36 million of Craigslist‘s earnings comes from sex and prostitution-related ads. Jim Townsend of the AIM Group said that:

“We’re astonished at the explosive growth Craigslist continues to show, even in a very tough economy. For 2010, its ‘adult services’ revenue will be three times the revenue it generated in that category in 2009.”

But it isn’t all sketchy roses for the people behind Craigslist. All of the money that they’re making off of these sex ads has attracted some attention from the police who are wondering if the site is being used more for sex exploitation than random hookups. If the possibility of sex abuse and exploitation isn’t disturbing enough, then maybe this is:

AIM estimates that Craigslist will earn about $122 million this year. If you do the math (i.e. divide), that comes out to about a $3 million paycheck for every employee.

Are you sick yet, because we definitely are.

  1. Joe Sexpot says:

The random hookup ads are free – its only the “adult services” ads that cost money. The irony here and it is freaking HUGE is that the “adult services” category was created because a bunch of really, really stupid states attorney generals forced Craigslist to start charging for those kinds of advertisements starting about 2 years ago.

Previous to the AGs involvement, there was only “erotic services” which were totally free (and still are outside of the USA, just check for any foreign city on craigslist). The AGs made Craigslist take down the free “erotic services” section in the USA and replace it with paid-ads only “adult services” which is also supposed to have stricter requirements (like no advertising of explicitly illegal services).

It didn’t take a law degree to figure out that the prostitutes would just pay the nominal charges (I think is about $10) and start wording their advertising a bit more discreetly.

So, the hookers keep advertising and craigslist gets turned into the biggest and most profitable pimp in the entire country all because a bunch of no-brain crusaders thought they could stop horny people from buying sex.
