Who Needs Water When You Can Get Beer For Less
They really have the right idea across the pond. Several British grocery store chains are being accused of encouraging binge drinking by offering beer for less than the cost of water. Ok so what’s the problem exactly?
Those opposed to the price drop say that research supports the claim that low prices encourage more drinking.
And, the problem is…? Ok, I joke, I joke. So what was their initial reaction to their countryman’s drinking problems: Earlier this year, the Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales, Sir Liam Donaldson, proposed hiking up the cost of a six-pack of lager to about £6 which, he said, would save up to 3,400 lives a year and decrease the number of hospital admissions by 100,000. But, thankfully, that suggestion didn’t fly and was promptly rejected.
But people are starting to get a little worried about Britain’s boozing habits. A spokeswoman for the British Medical Association said:
“It is a real worry that you can buy alcohol cheaper than mineral water. We have a huge problem with alcohol abuse in the UK, so we want a clampdown on these cut-throat price deals.”
Ok, I will admit that that the novelty of cheap beer with never get old for me (or most other people for that matter), but this might be borderline absurd. I mean, when beer starts coming out of the tap (you know the faucet variety), then I could see it being less than water. Until then, I’m going to need for British groceries to do a little better.
