Will the Next Nicholas Cage Movie Be the Most Wonderful Nicholas Cage Movie of All?
To follow Nicholas Cage‘s work is to watch a public tragedy of a career man in our times. The stakes are small, the fall is gradual and barely noticeable but not really buffered by any redeeming dignity on the hero’s part. Cage strove to be, briefly got to be, a respected actor, a mid-high achiever in his field – Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation. But he lacked the ability to understand when a script is good and when it’s only dressed up as a good script and left on his desk with a note like “Hey Nick, This may be the one you’ve been waiting for! -Your Agent.” These ranged from eh (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) to disastrous (The Wicker Man), and slowly, over many years, Nicholas Cage swallowed this realization and just stopped trying.
His next project will be Drive Angry,
The story centers on a man (Cage) driven by rage who is chasing the people who killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. The vendetta/rescue spins out of control as the chase gets bloodier by the mile, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.
And…
It’s in 3D. From the makers of My Bloody Valentine 3D! I do like how Hollywood has decided that 3D movies are cool now, like they’re rolling out a rad new movie-experiencing technology. No, we’ve had 3D for 20 years, and we decided 20 years ago that it was all right, but not worth wearing the stupid glasses. And that 3D movies themselves were flawed by the whole moviemaking team feeling obligated to include as many things popping off the screen as possible. The director all chewing out the screenwriters like, I’m paying you to write The Brothers Karamazov 3D here, emphasis on the 3D, ok? You have an opportunity to work in a rare art form! I need to see jack-in-the-boxes, doors opening really quickly, bees that are flying right at the audience’s faces and then stop just in time to do a “crunk” dance, maybe to that new song where they just keep singing “boom, boom, pow” over and over.
And Nick Cage’s agent is handing him the script like, look Nick, 3D is probably the future of Hollywood. A lot of directors are experimenting with the form, and you know, Drive Angry is really playing to your strengths, no one else in this town does righteous anger like you… OK, I’ll be straight with you. It’s not great. Nobody’s making anything great right now, you know? It’s a movie. And I… I just thought of you for this because I know you like to be in movies.
