Video: Electric Body Paint + Bikini Models = Human Synthesizer

thomas edison is like, good on you, calvin harris

When you’re an artist you can do whatever you want.  Picasso liked to eat breakfast at the Hardee’s drive-thru.  He ordered a steak with mayonnaise every time, even though they didn’t serve just a steak and mayonnaise was considered subversive in those years.  But he was always accomodated.  He paid by check, as he did for everything, because his signature on paper was worth more than a Large Number 5 (note: he truly did that).  Rembrandt once went to the president’s house for dinner and excused himself to spend 45 minutes in the john.  When he came back, his hair was wet and all he said was, “I’ve never used towels like those before.”

All of which is to say that if pop artist and musician Calvin Harris wants to make a human synthesizer (“Humanthesizer“) using a new kind of electric body paint and bikini models and play his new single “Ready for the Weekend” on it, that’s cool.  (It is actually cool as hell.)  Details and video of what I just described, after the jump.

The instrument employs 15 bikini clad models painted with Bare Conductive, a new skin safe ink which conducts electricity. When the performers touch the connection completes a circuit, triggering a sound.

The instrument consists of 34 pads on the floor which have been painted with the conductive ink and connected to a computer via some clever custom electronics. The performers stand on the pads, and touch hands to complete a circuit and trigger a sound. Different combinations of pads trigger the different sounds needed to play the track.

Harris appears to be disoriented in a drug way on the video, but here’s how he describes the casting: “The flesh and bones were sent to me by a team of… boffins.  And the boffins decided it should be done by attractive women.”
