Video: In Australia, It Is Considered Wrong to Mock Dying Children

A bunch of killjoys got all huffy today about a sketch on crappy Australian comedy show The Chaser’s War on Everything.  I’m not sure if “The Chaser” is the host guy, or a general Australian slang word for “douchebag,” or something about crocodiles.  But the sketch was about the “Make a Realistic Wish Foundation.”  Both ABC and the prime minister issued statements, of apology and outrage, respectively.  What was so bad?  Apparently, in Australia it is considered tasteless and low to make fun of dying children.  The statements (the PM’s is hilarious) and a clip of the sketch, ATJ:  

From ABC Apology Chairperson Kim Dalton:

“The Chaser’s War on Everything is a satirical program aimed at provoking debate and providing social commentary on topical issues, current affairs and public life in general.”  

“The sketch in last night’s show called ‘Making A Realistic Wish Foundation” was a satirical sketch and black comedy. 

“The ABC and The Chaser did not intend to hurt those who have been affected by the terminal illness of a child. We acknowledge the distress this segment has caused and we apologise to anyone we have upset. 

I’m not sure what’s being satirized here.  The Make a Wish Foundation?  For not granting good enough wishes?  

And from PM Kevin Rudd:

“I actually don’t mind The Chaser taking the mickey out of me or any other politician at any time or any place, that’s fine, that’s fair game,” Mr Rudd said. 

“But having a go at kids with a terminal illness is really beyond the pale, absolutely beyond the pale. 

“These guys collectively should get up and hang their heads in shame, it’s just wrong.” 

Go on, take the mickey out of me.  But you leave the mickeys out of the children.  

Now you know how it sounds when Australians express disappointment.
