Michael Vick Is Free, But Will He Play? Will Rover Fight?
What’s that, Lassie? There’s trouble… at the farmhouse? Wait… the Leavenworth Penitentiary? Is a young boy in trouble? No? It’s Michael Vick? He’s been released from prison? We’d better hurry! Wait… maybe you should stay here.
Yes, Atlanta Falcons QB and dogfight ringmaster Michael Vick is out, to serve the remaining 2 months of his sentence house-arrested in his Hampton, Va. home. He’ll be all right, though: he’s making $15 million from his current contract this year, despite his indefinite suspension from the NFL. But could he play again in 2009?
Roger Goodell has said he won’t consider reinstatement until Vick’s legal obligations are settled, and that might not be until July. Plus, it’s Goodell and he likes to drag things out, so don’t expect a quick decision on Vick’s future.
And, most likely, teams will wait on Vick’s current contract with the Falcons to run out so that they can, you know, pay him a ton less money. Yahoo! Sports speculates that the most likely teams to acquire Vick would be Oakland, Seattle, San Francisco, Minnesota, New York, and Washington. Why Oakland?
The Raiders are irrelevant, Al Davis won’t care about the negative press and a good number of Oakland fans can relate to Vick’s status as an ex-con.
Ha! It’s basically the XFL over there.
