What Will Be the One Millionth Word in the English Language?
At around 10:22 AM on June 10th, English will gain its one-millionth word. What will it be? Experts predict “n00b” and “defriend” are strong contenders. Imagine that: n00b, the one-millionth word in our august tongue. It would be like shooting a book in the face. More facts about words, described by me in words, ATJ.
The Global Language Monitor is the organization that decides what gets to be words and what doesn’t. The criteria:
It acknowledges new words once they have been used 25,000 times by media outlets, on social networking websites and in other sources.
A new word is added every 98 minutes or so. The average person has a vocabulary of 14,000 words (out of the million). If you dominated spelling bees like other kids dominated second base, then you’re rolling closer to 70,000. But at what cost? The rides home on the schoolbus were hell, and all my friends had names like Charizard and Mewtwo. I mean, yours did.
Some more possible millionth words:
Another internet word “noob” – a derogatory name for someone new to a particular task or community – is also in the running, along with “greenwashing” (what companies do to appear environmentally friendly) and “chiconomics” (recession fashion).
Wow, those are all pretty crappy choices!
Sorry I wrote two posts in a row about shooting in the face. It’s Friday as hell in here.
