MTV Decides to Actually Play Music Videos

MTV Logo. (4)

Once upon a time, MTV used to play music videos. It’s true. Long before materialistic brats ruled the channel with their incessant whining on shows, like My Super Sweet 16 and The Hills, MTV had music-related programs, such as Headbangers Ball, Yo! MTV Raps, Video Jukebox, and (my personal favorite) 120 Minutes.

Now the network’s general manager, Scott Friedman, has announced the unveiling of a new morning program, called AMTV, that will feature music videos from 3 to 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Despite MTV.com and YouTube showcasing full-length music videos for free, Friedman expects the show to be a success. In particular, because it will feature clips (not sure whether old or new) from their classic show, MTV Unplugged.

“We’re trying to move as the audience moves with their consumption habits,” adding, “we know our audience wants more of it.”

I tried doing some background research on Scott Friedman, but gave up after getting bored with the results. MTV needs to clean house and hire some new heads. Funny to think the writers for most of the shows are probably young and talented, and yet they have to bring to life the projects created by old white dudes who have no effing clue what people really want more of.

At this point, it doesn’t even matter if MTV plays music videos ever again. I could do easily do without whatever new pop act they deem fit for the spotlight, but it would be nice if they were to focus their attention on developing some kick-ass programs.

Æon Flux was awesome, as was other Liquid Generations shows like The Maxx, Daria, and Beavis and Butthead. Then, of course, there was also The State, The Sifl & Olly Show, Jackass, Loveline (w/ the ever-sexy Dr. Drew Pinsky), The Jon Stewart Show, The Tom Green Show, and Undressed.

F^ck, man. I loved these shows! Now that I really think back at what they used to have makes the network suck even more now. They should just put those shows back in syndication during the morning hours. Guarantee that would work a million times better than playing another lame-ass Jason Mraz or Nickelback video.

What were your favorite MTV shows growing up? Do you think AMTV will bring them the traffic they are looking for. I wanna hear it!

    Late 80′s, Headbangers Ball!

They actually played good music back then!

I quit watching right after TRL took over. It was like listening to music with a bunch of people talking over it. All they’d show was little sound bites of music video’s with a bunch of kids yelling shots out during the beginning and end of a music vid; they shoulda named it TWT (total waste of time). And I’m def not listening to the nickelodeon crap they play today.

Btw, you forgot Ren and Stimpy.

Cable TV (like the financial industry) went to hell when they removed all the anti-monopoly restrictions. Now all the networks are controlled by a small handful of multinationals who make lateral deals with giant production companies.

The sinlge most important thing any American can stand for today is “Anti-Trust” lesgislation to prevent Corporatism.

  4. Yeah, TRL was a nightmare. Ren and Stimpy was awesome, but I associate that more with Nickelodeon. And yeah, it’s sad to think that everything is pretty much in the hands of a few individuals.
