Rock Out with Your Sock Out: Free Download of Placebo’s New Single, “Battle for the Sun”

It’s been 3 years since post-punk, neo-glam rock band Placebo released Meds, their fifth album since 1996′s self-titled debut an album that, at the time, charmed the panties off androgynous girls boys worldwide.
Meds, however, was average at best. It failed to flaunt lead singer Brian Molko‘s notorious lyrics of “sex, drugs, and complications” to the fullest appreciation, using more watered-down metaphors then they’d originally done early in their career with hit tracks, like “Nancy Boy,” “Pure Morning” and “Every you Every me.”
Enter Battle For the Sun. Scheduled for release June 8 of this year, the British band have released the title track of their upcoming album as a free download on their website.
At first discovery, my heart skipped a beat. A fan of Placebo for nearly a decade (I got into them a little late in the game), “Battle for the Sun” was the promise of something great. At least, I was hoping as much.
Alas, if their title track is any indication, I foresee an album about as predictable and bland as anything by Fallout Boy. At 5:37, the song is much too long. Especially when one consider it takes more than a minute of repetitive vocals and guitar strums for anything to even happen.
It’s kinda of like watching Kim Kardashian and Ray J‘s sex tape. You keep expecting something impressive to happen, but then it sort of just ends and you sit there bored and confused before taking a piss and flipping on the TV Guide Channel.
Check out pics of the band and the song below!
What do you guys think of it????

It’s okay but radio should cut out the first 2 minutes and 20 sec… if it makes it that far. Can’t really hear the background that well but it doesn’t really sound like anything new from them. Reminded me of a of an old Pavement song with something from the pixies mixed in. I need a little less voice and a little more guitar.
Hmmm an old Pavement song. I don’t know that I see that one. I can definitely see the Pixies however. Man, now I want to listen to both those bands! Thanks! Something we get so caught up in the new, we forget about the oldies but goodies. And yeah, more guitar. I was disappointed in the drums. They kind of took the backburner for a good majority of the song. Like you said, they need to cut out the first 2.3 minutes. Otherwise, that track has even less chances of being radio-friendly. Although, I don’t know that Placebo was ever really radio-friendly, beyond college stations. Haha. Good to see I wasn’t talking to the air. Thanks!!!

I just wanted to add that I’m listening to Pavement now and I kinda wanna shoot myself. When I’m in the mood for them, they’re great. But if not, it’s like mediocre sorrow music. I don’t know. I think my brain needs a jolt of stimulation this morning. lol

Hi Melyssa, cool blog. I think Placebo’s best work was their first album, most stuff after that for me has been rather dull. They had another drummer for that record who really gave the band some much needed propulsion.
