Rock Out with Your Sock Out
Not a big country fan? I grew up in the rural south, so that kind of ruined me on the stuff. I can’t help but love old country though. Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson are the ones that have regular rotation for me, but it goes so much deeper.
If you ever find yourself tapping your feet to Johnny Cash or Jerry Jeff Walker, then you should like these guys, The Gourds. You probably remember their twangy version of Snoop Dogg‘s “Gin and Juice”. Although that song is kind of a joke, it does give you a glimpse at the personality of the band. I feel like my pothead uncle probably has all their albums stacked up next to his Hootie and the Blowfish and Widespread Panic.
They just released a new album on Tuesday, called “Haymaker!“. I haven’t heard the whole thing, but it sounds fresh and very well-rounded.
There is rock music that claims to be country, country music that sucks, and then there’s albums like this, country music that rocks. If you ever listend to String Cheese Incident or Railroad Earth, you might really enjoy them live, as they can pick with the best of them. Pretty much, there’s something for most. Watch them perform on YouTube, before you say “I’ve never liked country, I won’t like this.”
