JENNIFER Hawkins played horse whisperer yesterday when she came face to face with today’s Victoria Derby favourite, Manawanui.

The blonde beauty whispered a few words to the star three-year-old gelding and sealed it with a kiss.

“I think that should do the trick,” she said. “I’m definitely going to put a bet on him.”

Purchased at the bargain price of $45,000 through the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Manawanui has won six of his eight starts, two at Group 1 level.

I used to bet on the ponies from time to time, until New York City decided not to subsidize the local OTBs. There’s nothing like getting a few drinks and then guessing on which ponies will win any one of the near anonymous horse races going on around the world at a given moment. Sure I lost a lot of money, but really what else was I going to do what the loose change sitting in my pocket? Drink it away? Eh, same thing, right?
