Chilean Miners Will Have To Survive Sans Alcohol And Cigarettes
The Chilean miners saga is a sad ordeal indeed. For nearly a month, the miners have been trapped 2,300 ft. below ground in a San Jose mine as NASA tries to figure out how to safely rescue them. So after all of this, after the prospect of spending weeks or even months longer in the mine, you wouldn’t think it was too much to ask for them to get some booze and cigarettes, right? Well, they can thank NASA for shooting down that idea. Find out more after the jump.
NASA deputy chief doctor James Michael Duncan has decided that sending along alcohol and cigarettes to the trapped miners might not be the wisest decision:
On booze: “From the alcohol standpoint, we need to first get their nutrition up before we make any considerations there.”
On cigarettes: “It’s an environment that’s pretty enclosed and we don’t want to contribute to any of the problems within the atmosphere of the mine.”
Eh, I guess we can’t really blame the guy for shooting down those ideas. And apparently some of the miners had struggled with addiction before they were trapped so a sober-free existence might actually be good for them.
